Robert Houstoun Anderson letter, 1864.

The collection consists of a three-page typed copy of a letter from Col. R. H. Anderson to General Braxton Bragg, dated May 21, 1864. In the letter, Anderson outlines his CSA career and asks for active duty for his regiment, the 5th Georgia Cavalry.

Robert Houston Anderson (1835-1888) was a general in the Confederate States of American Army during the Civil War. After the war he became Chief of Police in Savannah, Georgia. The 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was organized in January 1863. It was formed through the consolidation of the 1st and 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions. The men were from the counties of Effingham, Screven, Liberty, Bulloch, Lamar, and McIntosh. The regiment was sent to Mississippi and placed in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps.
